On the left is a typical portrait of St. Augustine as a bishop in his ornate pontificals. a bishop's most formal vestments, worn for especially solemn celebrations On the right, St. Jerome's portrait is also faithful to iconographical tradition. A lion at his feet, he wears the red hat and cape of a cardinal and holds a maquette of a church. A seraph hovers above.
